Springs Reserve

Las Vegas unveils newest cultural attraction

Long-awaited, 180-acre non-gaming attraction to become city's "Central Park"

For Immediate Release: Jun 03, 2007

Las Vegas, NV -The Springs Preserve (Preserve), a $250 million non-gaming cultural attraction located a few miles off the Las Vegas Strip is set to open on June 8. With 180 acres of museums, botanical gardens, galleries, trails and entertainment venues, the Preserve will fill a niche in Las Vegas as a new cultural hub for locals as well as for tourists seeking an off-Strip experience.

Community leaders and planners have spent nearly a decade developing the facility, which is designed to answer the communitys call for a cultural and educational gathering place on its most treasured national historic site. Thousands of years ago, the Preserve was the site of the first water in the valley and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

"The Springs Preserve represents to Las Vegas what Central Park represents to New York," said Springs Preserve director Francis N. Béland. "Not aesthetically, but in what it means to the community from a historic and cultural perspective."

The two main galleries of the Preserve, the ORIGEN Experience and the Desert Living Center, take visitors on a fascinating journey through Las Vegas history and introduce them to the latest innovative concepts and tools for living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

An uncommon blend of interactive and educational experiences for all ages are folded into the visitor experience, which includes: an up-close look at a living bat cave, a brush with a live flash flood, a historic trail walk that passes by a Cienega (desert wetland), or an outdoor cooking demonstration in the botanical gardens. Children can climb aboard a 50-foot rattlesnake replica in the children's playground, visit the Preserve's resource library, master one of the many educational video games in the New Frontier Gallery or trade in their own artifacts at the Nature Exchange for other desired items.

Families can cap off their day with a live outdoor concert in the Springs Amphitheater, a light dinner in the Springs Café (operated by Wolfgang Puck) overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, and a casual stroll through the Canary Project photo gallery.

"The Preserve has something fun, intriguing and educational for everyone," said Beland. "And the breadth of offerings simply cannot be experienced in a single visit."

“We are extremely proud of the Convention Services Association’s continuing efforts to support local Las Vegas charities.”
 – Madison Womack, CSA President 2005-2006

As part of CSA’s raffle ticket fund to support local charities, we have added an additional cause to this year’s list of recipients.  We will continue our successful holiday program to purchase gifts and food for the families at Nellis Air Force Base in 2006.  We have also added the WeekEND Hunger program as an adopted charity this year.

WeekEND Hunger is an organization created by the Las Vegas Leadership Class of 2006, of which, the CSA Secretary, Kimberly Farkas, is a graduate.  The program was established to help boost the current Communities in Schools program.  Communities in Schools is an organization that supports at-risk youth in the Las Vegas school district.

WeekEND Hunger was created to feed the hungry children who depend on the school cafeteria for nourishment – food needed for a healthy start and a healthy future.  Each Friday, backpacks are filled with child-friendly food and are sent home with students who have been identified as needing help.  Empty backpacks are returned the following Monday accompanied by a thank-you note from the student.

This program has been so successful in its infancy that the Las Vegas Leadership Class of 2006 saw an opportunity to adopt the program and raise funds to give it a 2-year boost.  The goal is to expand the program to include other schools that have also been identified that would greatly benefit.

This is a worthwhile cause.  We are helping to feed the children in Las Vegas. No child should have to go hungry.

As members of the Convention Services Association, you can feel proud to be supporting these important Las Vegas charities with your continued support of the organization and attending monthly meetings.

If you would like further information on the WeekEND Hunger program or Leadership Las Vegas, please visit www.llv06.com for further details.

                                                                                    - Kimberly Farkas, Secretary

Black Canyon

Black Canyon/Willow Beach River Adventures offers raft tours daily aboard large, motor-assisted rafts from the base of  Hoover Dam through the Black Canyon for 12 miles on the Colorado River. The canyon walls rise 2,000 feet above the river's edge and leave you breathless views as the trip progresses down the river. Be prepared to see Desert Big Horn sheep, Osprey, and Great Blue Heron in their natural setting.

The rafts will stop along the shore for a chance to swim and the opportunity to enjoy the box lunch provided in a souvenir insulated cooler. The trip ends at Willow Beach located at the northern end of Lake Mohave. Here you will board our comfortable tour buses for the ride back to the Hacienda Hotel outside of Boulder City, the beginning point of your day's adventure.

CSA members are invited to take advantage of the Weekend Special. Members with a Nevada driver's license can take the trip on Saturday or Sunday for $66.50 per adult passenger instead of the regular $82.95 rate. Child rates are available. Call 294-1414 for more information or to make a reservation.
